Alison Bignon’s poetic private opening of FRAGMENTS on December 16th at DeRe Gallery drew in an eclectic crowd of sophisticated international art collectors and Hollywood talent.  It was a romantic atmosphere with wine and bubbling champagne on a rainy winter night in Los Angeles.

Alison’s first solo exhibition is a homage to the novel ‘Fragments of a Romantic Dialogue’ by Roland Barthes in which Alison Bignon depicts the narratives of love stories using challenging and poetic aesthetics.  The series entitled ‘Loose Notes of Sorrow’ tells without voyeurism the perception of emotions that surrounds the artist.  Each piece of art depicts a different individual’s story by expressing emotions through precision of lines, the delicacy of her embossing and her obsessive care for the right color.  This aesthetic of detail speaks to viewers with the resonation of such emotions as joy, nostalgia and love.

Bignon’s ‘Loose Notes of Sorrow’ series is also depicted through the medium of video, in which she rewrites people’s emotions with recordings.  This process encompassed meeting anonymous people who opened up about powerful emotions such as love sorrows, disillusions, great shivers and passionate sensitivity.  Alison then rewrote these individual’s emotions elicited in the meetings and interprets them in black and white videos.

Alison Bignon was initially educated in theatre at Ecole de Chaillot and became the youngest Director in a French National theatre.  She then explored her curiosity of art by continuing her education at the Art School of Versailles, where she perfected her mastery in all traditional artist techniques and discovered the process of engraving.  This fusion of theatrical education and engraving precision encompasses the trademark of Alison’s practice.
