Ericka Toure Aviance has been regarded as one of the most highly recognized drag performers in the United States since she made her first appearance in the NYC nightlife scene in 1999. Prior to Aviance success in New York City, she resided in Portsmouth, New Hampshire were she did not feel free to be herself. As a result, she always dreamed of being apart of the New York City life. In an Interview with Paper Magazine she moved to NYC not only for NYC nightlife, but to also have Freedom. Since Aviance’s arrival to NYC, she has been immensely successful.
Aviance is currently a 2003 graduate from the Tisch School of Integrated Dane of New York University, and is also a member of a sisterhood of creative people known as the House of Aviance. In the Past, Aviance has performed at the gay pool party known as Dr!p, Saturday night residency at the Ritz, and the Spank Magazine Party at the House. Aviance has also been on tour with Jonny McGovern, “the gay pimp”, in Virginia, Ohio, Miami, Seattle, San Francisco, and Hawaii.
Despite her success, there are always bumps in the road. Recently, Aviance made an audience appearance at the Wendy Williams Show, were she was not allowed to ask “Hot Topic” questions, she was placed in a seat behind a tall male were she could not be seen, and was almost denied entry into the show due to the show’s “no costume policy”. Lonnie Burstien, Producer of the Wendy Williams Show, apologized to Aviance stating “ I sincerely apologize as it was never intention to offend in any way”.
